In physics we usually use the latter definition when we refer to parity. Note that parity is actually not a fundamental symmetry of nature! (e.g. the standard model)

Yes, P is used in actual calculations, but M is more down to earth. Yes, parity violation for weak interactions, but it's good with electromagnetism and strong interactions (and gravity so far as relativity goes, I think).
