We distinguish between the idea of a variable (e.g. position of an object) and a specific value of it (the object is *there*). Physicists would call the former x, and the latter x_0 or something. Apparently statisticians call the former X, and the latter x. Very confusing.

The physicists' way is better, of course, because that's the way I was first taught.
