Friends who are up and have a Windows machine and have tried both WSL and a virtual machine to use Linux on their laptops: is WSL much better? Is it a pain in the butt to get running? PLEASE no dual boot suggestions, I'm not willing to take that plunge.

I have but my experience with it suuuuccckkkks like really bad. It's *so slow*, and (due to my own failures I admit) I messed up my previous setup pretty bad and would need to start from scratch anyway, so I figured I'd like to go the better route this time
