The trick here is to convert the matrix iM into an upper triangular matrix. Because all matrices over complex number (or any algebraically closed filed) is similar to an upper triangular matrix(accurately speaking, Jordan form)

When I was learning linear algebra I was frequently puzzled by what the significance of the trace was. The emphasis given to it made it seem important but I couldn't figure out why.
