I’m guessing the symbol(psi ?) that represents the function of x is not a wave function in this context ?
Before second quantization, it does represent the wave function of a spin 1/2 particle, but also of its antiparticle. After second quantization it represents the quantized spin 1/2 field.
The Schrödinger equation is explicitly not Lorentz invariant, whereas the Dirac equation was the first equation that described the quantum nature of electrons and was Lorentz invariant. So it joined SR and QM very nicely.

Indeed. It's the basis for Quantum Electrodynamics. QED comes from quantizing the Dirac field and then gauging the global U(1) symmetry
