      The triangle inequality |A - B| ≤ |A| + |B| does not generally hold for matrices A,B (unless they commute). Definition: the absolute |A| of a square matrix A is defined as the square root of A*A, where A* is the conjugate transpose of A. #algebra #math #FunFact #funtimes

          The absolute value |A| of a matrix A is also matrix (a positive matrix), not a norm like ||A||. (Of course, the norm ||A|| must satisfy the triangle inequality.)
