Ok, folks that spend time doing software development: What's the ratio of time spent writing good documentation over time spent writing coding?

50/50. Docstrings should explain every input variable and every output from every function/class. If no one can understand your code, why should anyone trust your science?

You should! http://youtube.com/joelgrus BTW, I'm not one of those "code should be self-documenting" people, but I am a "code should be mostly self documenting" person. That is, you should aspire to write your code so it doesn't *need* a ton of extra documentation.
