In response to Sabine's blog which people have so kindly forwarded: I simply quote her argument. The existence of stupidity is not an argument for more stupidity.
I feel like if I follow her reasoning that, were it the price of the LHC to experimentally test the "Maxwell term" in Ampere's law (which was added solely because the asymmetry unsettled him), we would argue against testing such an "absurdly hopeful idea".

I wonder if we can use other experiments to guide us to what energy colliders we should build. We don't know if there's something living at those higher energies or just a desert all the way to the Planck energy....
