LaTeX poll: should i= √(-1) be italicized? That is,$i$ or \text{i}?

Firm believer in \text{i}. Open to being persuaded otherwise, but I think contextually special quantities should be distinguished from variables and indices.
But isn’t i not distinguishing the variable at all, especially when inline?
I’m even willing to bet you think I made a grammatical mistake when you read that the first time. #QED

I didn't because of context and the prevalence of autocorrect, but that does rely on me being a native speaker of English who is very familiar with capitalization rules, I've just realized. So maybe
$i$ is a better choice. Probably more likely to confuse based on capitalization. -
