Firm believer in \text{i}. Open to being persuaded otherwise, but I think contextually special quantities should be distinguished from variables and indices.
LaTeX poll: should i= √(-1) be italicized? That is,$i$ or \text{i}?

But isn’t i not distinguishing the variable at all, especially when inline? I’m even willing to bet you think I made a grammatical mistake when you read that the first time.
