Ever seen insects spiralling to a lamp? They actually want to fly in a straight line by looking at the light source at a constant angle. This would work with the Sun or Moon, but lamps fool them into flying along logarithmic spirals. [Wiki http://bit.ly/2Vzt2sf ] #50FamousCurvespic.twitter.com/gBLv7RpmnO
I don’t exactly see how a light bulb seems to distort an insects notion of a straight line

Insects' straight line is a path along which the light source is seen at the constant angle. They fix this angle by making sure that light hits a specific part of their compound eyes. Distant sources (like the Sun) have ≈parallel light rays giving rise to straight line paths.

But when the light source is near rays are radial giving rise to logarithmic spirals.
