The PowerPlus began to make a name for itself. A race machine claimed to have reached 120 MPH, Cannonball Baker showcased its reliability by riding 1,027 miles in 24 hours, and later Burt Munro would achieve his speed record of 190.07 MPH on a modified Scout with a PowerPlus.

The original PowerPlus motor was developed by Charles Gustafson. In 1916, the Indian PowerPlus introduced Gustafson's new engine of the same name, a 61-cubic-inch V-twin with side valves, replacing the inlet-over-exhaust layout.
