On the other two hands: 1) "incel" wasn't *intended* to be a hate term (weak argument, yes); 2) using "misogyny" expands criticism to *all* forms of misogyny, which I think is a good move.

Reaaallllly gotta disagree there. Misogyny is super vague and we already discuss it in different forms. This is a specific thing being discussed here tho. And terms are appropriated unfortunately. That's an impt pt to bring up when discussing incels tho.

It wasn't "involuntary celibacy" that made him murderously hateful, though. That would be saying "he killed because he couldn't get laid". It really was misogyny. Focusing on the "incel" label is missing the point, and letting *them* set the narrative.

Making the narrative about "incel" is making the same mistake as with ISIS; you're letting *them* set the terms they way they like. The whole point of them using "incel" is to avoid being too plain-spoken about their misogyny. And we'd be giving them a pass on that.

I think it's wrong and dangerous to refuse to name, identify and explore the problem. I don't think it was a mistake to name ISIS either.

I'm not saying refuse to name them. I'm saying call it what it is: "he was part of a community of extreme misogynists that call themselves 'incels', part of the wider misogynist internet including MGTOW etc". Make the focus the misogyny, not the little group.

Literally everyone talking in any detail about incels are mentioning how misogynistic they are. I don't see the issue.

I didn't say there was an issue. I was just pointing out that that's the way we should be handling this. Thus far, most media has been pretty good about it.

To put another way: What I'm saying is every time we talk about this, we should use the word "misogyny". That should be front and centre in every take. As for "incel"... meh. Yeah, sure, go ahead and mention it if you want.

No I don't think it has to be mentioned in the same breath. That seems like a weird rule. But obviously if someone is speaking about it in detail they do mention it.

For now, yes. But that's only because everyone has to explain "incel" (which basically requires "misogyny"). Once "incel" is a term everyone knows, most people will probably just use it as a boogieman term on its own.

It will be fine imo. Just like I don't think trying to rebrand white supremacy as alt right escaped that connotation

And when that happens, we have the same pattern as always: misogynists will simply ditch the term and move on to another one... while keeping the misogyny intact (and even join in on dissing incels). That's what I want to caution people against.

But ur acting as if no one is discussing the misogyny. Very strange point I must say. I'll excuse myself now as I think we're just going in circles.

I'm not acting that way at all. In fact I've literally said the opposite more than once. They way it's being discussed now is *good*. My concern is *keeping* it good once it's no longer necessary to explain "incel is misogyny" in every take.

It's a strange thing to worry about something that is already working out well.

It will be the same as now when it's not necessary to explain alt right means white supremacist....and we don't have to say it in the same breath.
