Incredibly saddened by the loss of my colleague and mentor Steve Rayner. I'm very moved - but not at all surprised - to see so many people paying tribute to his wisdom and also his kindness. He will be greatly missed.

Steve Rayner, the 'undisciplined scholar' will be sorely missed. A gifted, innovative and sharp mind with a kindness, decency and humanity missing in many corners of academia. Thank you for bringing me to Oxford and for your support throughout my academic career. So long Steve!

Steve Rayner was a wonderful colleague and inspiring boss during my postdoc, and a huge support in the years since. He was insightful, brilliant, funny and he is missed and loved by many.

Steve Rayner will deeply missed. I am blessed to have had him as a friend, colleague, host and mentor. I will not only miss him personally, but his sharp analysis and critical insights are wanted in climate research and today's polarized politics.

Steve Rayner died, & the world will not be the same. During a particularly difficult time during my PhD, Steve went out of his way to welcome me at . The night before my husband and I left, Steve demanded that we look for the shark on the way out of town. He will be missed.
