It is interesting. Trans men tend to say they want to be men. Most trans women say they want to be women. But some (grown trans women) say they want to be "girls." Never heard a grown ass trans man say they want to be a "boy."

Yes. Also, accross the board, the transwomen I've found reasonable and easy to reach compromises re womens' rights and interests with have not referrred to themselves as a "girl". Not one of them.

I don't think it's rooted in the same phenomenon, but I actually have seen trans men say they want to be a "guy" (or maybe a "boy"), but don't want to be a "man." If you search around on the transmen subreddits you can find conversations like this.
