When I was trans it was hard to feel accepted by online groups. The TRAs didn't want me because I was truscum The Radfems didn't want me because I was neither a feminist nor fond of being called mutilated. So I found other truscum, many of whom I'm still friends with today 1/2

She had a medical reason to get a mastectomy. Life or death operations aren't in the same league.

It's not the "reason" that makes something mutilation. Mutilation is by definition the infliction of disfigurement. If my chest is "mutilated" then so is every other chest that has had a mastectomy, regardless of the reason.

Yes, of course I agree. It is a strong, and can be, a pejorative word. When I first started talking about FGM 50 years ago, almost nobody had heard of it. I was often criticised for being so graphic. It used to be called “female circumcision”, and as many males are “circumcised”

It was not thought to be so bad. Only by sharing graphic first hand accounts, photographs, diagrams was I able to explain the horror. I was also criticised for condemning a “cultural practice” that was none of my business. I feel like this about “sex change” operations...

I think we have to use strong language to get people's attention - so many people are completely unaware of what is happening. And mutilation is an appropriate term for having healthy body parts removed that will mean no breast feeding beautiful bubs or even having those bubs.
