I think you hit the nail on something, I've known a female who identifies as "trans-masculine" and said because of Yaoi and Gay fanfiction she saw herself in the male characters in those works, leading them to the claim of their current identity
It definitely happens. I wish it was given more attention, esp. with more and more girls suddenly turning up at gender clinics. It's not the only factor, but it deserves more attention.
