In non-Covid news, I explored transphobia in the UK, which was set alight by an attempt to make gender legislation more humane and equitable. Now the toxic narrative, which killed reform in Westminster, has arrived in Scotland.https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/04/uk/trans-rights-reforms-scotland-gbr-intl/index.html …

Curiously, while the biggest opposition to trans rights in the US is associated with the Christian right, high profile journalists, radical feminists and academics are among the loudest dissenters to reform in Britain.

And like American legislators who debated so-called "bathroom bills" that restricted access to public accommodations for trans people, British opponents argue that any new trans rights, such as the act's amendment, undermine existing protections for cisgender women and girls

But there is hope in Scotland. Why? Because the Scottish government has repeatedly expressed its commitment to reforming the gender recognition act — a move that has the backing of some of the country’s biggest women’s groups

Thanks to @ScottishTrans, @JaneFae @christineburns and many others for speaking to me for this piece. RIP my mentions. Read my write here: The quest for trans rights has exposed a deep divide in the UK. Scotland may show a way forwardhttps://www.cnn.com/2020/04/04/uk/trans-rights-reforms-scotland-gbr-intl/index.html …

      Replying to @tarajohn @ScottishTrans and

"Some opponents of the new draft law ... believe trans women pose a threat in spaces that are for women." This is not true. Trans women are not the problem. It's male predators who would exploit the reforms. The proposed reforms are vague and poorly defined - at best.

"Trans women" are men and men don't belong in women's spaces so "trans women" are the problem. And they have all the rights that every other man has plus the additional "right" to invade women only spaces. #MenAreNotWomen
