Curious about Twitter nastiness. In conversation, we say “I don’t agree because ….” On Twitter, “you vile piece of shit” replaces “because ….” Why? Has it escalated like loudness of talk in crowded room? Starts quiet but escalates till all yell to be heard. Nastier than thou?

I saw Twitter-famous people posting some of the vilest responses under their own names. We might just be a really lousy species.
If you come into my sight, and I recognize you, I'll be just as nasty in person.
But is that the main driver for toxic behavior? I think it's just habit. People get frustrated and reply to anger in an angry way, then get used to it and repeat it. It's an easy habit to develop online, one of the reasons being what you said.
