I could not agree more. When I think of things that made me feel drowned in shame, for instance, I can't let go. But I'm so much wiser for the understanding I have into things. Which makes it easier to forgive my younger self for missteps I couldn't possibly have understood then.

Guilt and shame and self-pity hold us back, but the experiences that led to those emotions taught us something we didn't previously know. If we never forget them, hopefully with time we'll learn not to repeat them.

I agree. What I haven't completely been able to shake is suddenly experiencing the pain of old shame, usually hiding in memories that come unbidden. But I've gotten very good at talking myself out of that when it happens and figuring out what brought it back. I'm my own analyst.

Talking to yourself is so good for you, even if it sounds a bit mental. I talk to my depressed self the way I talk to my depressed friends, sometimes no advice is needed - just a pair of ears to vent to, even if they're my own. Be your own analyst, counsellor and best friend.
