I've been called both "hen" and "mate" by strangers so many times over the past few days, I have no idea what I'm generally perceived as. Older women seem to clock that I'm female the quickest, which is interesting.

Mate is becoming gender neutral anyway I think - hadn’t thought about it til I read this, but it’s my experience.
True. My male and female mates call me mate, and always have. But when a male cashier calls me mate, he's seeing me as a man.
