Can someone please explain to me... What is the obsession with anime? I don't get it. TIA
It’s simply another form of escapism, like TV shows and video games. Which is fine, each to ones own. I still don’t get the whole ‘grown men like my little pony’ thing, though.

It seems to be a form of escapism where potentially isolated teenage boys start to identify with idealised feminine characters. These boys, although not noticeably effeminate, realise that masculinity is very oppressive. They find it lacking in pleasure.

That depends entirely on the type of anime these boys are watching. Maybe things are different now, but 10-ish years ago when I watched anime there were plenty of strong male leads and male side characters that were stereotypically masculine in a positive way.
