Sad to see the Economist providing a platform to bad-faith claims based in pseudo-science and ideological studies. This is misinformation. The process of "affirming" their identities takes years, it's not a simple process. This is severely dishonest and shouldn't be promoted.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I was handed a prescription for HRT after only a few visits to the gender clinic. It didn't take years - it didn't even take 1 year.

My 18 yo D attended a highly ranked university and they directed her to an informed-consent transgender clinic as the only option. The 2nd visit to that clinic, she received a prescription for testosterone. The university COULD have advised a more cautious approach, but didn't.
