I haven't heard of something like that, but sounds interesting. In S, it'd most likely be a new media type that handles unpacking and displaying WARC. Seems theoretically straightforward at first glance.

I know there are server-side WARC libraries—Rhizome maintains one or two as part of its WebRecorder work—so yeah, it seems like it oughta be possible?

Because the alternative is “tell end-users to go download WebRecorder Player,” which isn’t the greatest option. I guess most places relying on Omeka also rely on IA/Archive-It so WARC access hasn’t come up as a use-case.

Yes, it would be great to see web archive replay integrated into existing CMS and digital repository platforms. Can you explain more about the use case? Do you want to have an archived page displayed in a frame inside of an Omeka page?

That’s one possibility. I was also thinking something kinda like what DSpace does (or used to do?), which is “here’s the home page for this item, go browse” involving a crapton of URL rewriting and stuff. No frames, just browsing. E.g. https://minds.wisconsin.edu/bitstream/handle/1793/8178/go.html?sequence=10&isAllowed=y …

Used to be that the only bitstream DSpace showed on the item page was the home page for the archived website, but… either that’s changed or somebody hosed MINDS@UW after I left, grrrrrr.

Anyway, the use case I was thinking of is “somebody uses WebRecorder or wevs to archive something on the web to a WARC; how do they use their CMS/IR/whatever to provide access to the WARC now?"

I've been thinking about this also: main approach would be to run additional server-side software, such as Webrecorder/pywb and integrate into CMS/IR -- this was only option until recently, and still a good choice, but requires extra maintenance -- only option until recently

I've been working on a new prototype to allow opening WARCs directly in browser, like PDFs: https://wab.ac/  This system is entirely client-side and could be integrated into any HTML page -- no server required. The catch is it requires newer browsers (won't work in IE)

EEEEE! That is WAY COOL! I can live with “doesn’t work in IE.” I’m amazed anything still DOES work in IE.

Thanks! Some examples of this in recent blog post: https://blog.webrecorder.io/2019/11/06/self-hosted-archival-embeds.html … Each embed is loaded from a small WARC directly in browser, Assume could integrate this system for loading WARCs in a frame with Omeka. Happy to chat more/help out with this if there is interest!
