Embeds (tweets, videos, etc...) are such a common part of modern web publishing. But embeds can disappear and change... What if publishers could host 'archival embeds' and present both? For
#WebArchiveWednesday, we present a new experiment on our blog: https://blog.webrecorder.io/2019/11/06/self-hosted-archival-embeds.html …pic.twitter.com/AHvv9nFuhTThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo -

Honored to have been asked to write a guest post for DSHR's blog on the implications of client-side web archive replay technology. (Also cross-posted on our Webrecorder blog: https://blog.webrecorder.io/2019/10/03/client-side-replay …)https://twitter.com/digipresnews/status/1179774518560198659 …

The new, clearer HAR export/import toolbar buttons in Chrome 76
@ChromeDevTools are a small step in browsers improving built-in support for web archiving! You can create a HAR using the browser, export, and then replay in-browser using: https://wab.ac/ pic.twitter.com/TMOo5gNPyQ

This might seem like just an elegant hack but it means discrete web archives (WARC files) can be easily shared as static web pages, without having to set up and maintain complex server-side playback software.https://twitter.com/IlyaKreymer/status/1144052239033499650?s=19 …

Client-side web archive replay can blur the line between an archived page and an archive, but perhaps also provide additional transparency and insight into how the web archive replay process works by moving most of the hard work to the browser itself!

By archiving a client-side replay system like http://wab.ac , it may be possible to create an alternate replay system from within an existing one For example, it should be possible to load an alternative replay of IA's wayback by loading: https://web.archive.org/web/https://wab.ac/#/20180131235341|https://www.cnn.com/ …

But what if the http://wab.ac could be used to improve fidelity and trust of existing web archives, and address limitations of existing replay systems, all w/o costing any more $ to operate ? This is now possible, as a proof-of-concept, at: https://web.archive.org/web/https://wab.ac/ …

As DSHR suggests, alternate replay systems like http://oldweb.today could more easily display the temporal range of a given page instead of a single date. Here's another quick example from https://wab.ac pic.twitter.com/iI4lyIP5ZN
