Genuine question for the people who are worried about who you would call in the case of a robbery if the police get defunded: have you ever been robbed, and what did the police do to help?

I hope it’s clear here that the point isn’t that I want cops to more effectively imprison people for petty theft - it’s just clear that the only role they’re playing here is passing a note to your insurance company, and I feel like people without guns could manage that just fine

But how will your insurance company be able to tell you what they will and will not replace without the police writing down a number for you?

Had a bike stolen, cops did nothing, found it for sale on gumtree, told the detective, he called the guy, called me back and said “yeah the guys fine, said he bought it off a junkie, I believe him, nice guy. He has equal claim to the bike, you’ll have to go to court”

Wait laundering bikes make it legitimately your property? Wait til I try this argument out on my Indigenous mutuals

I got told once, "We can't do anything, because there wasn't any surveillance video." We were standing in a business, and the cop never asked if they had cameras. We were in a crowd of firsthand witnesses to an assault.

Once I had to call the cops to report identity theft when I found out someone used my SSN to open a cell phone account, because the credit bureau required a police report # to remove it from my record. The cop on the phone mocked me for reporting it.

I had identity theft that racked up 4K on a credit card. I had the phone number and address of the person who did it, and they *wouldn't even take it*.

That’s been my experience too. We have had people do petty theft all the time in my neighborhood. Heck they are even caught on video, but it’s just like “oh well, what can we do?” You’re a police, solve a crime homie.

The only crimes they care about are ones where they can feel like a hero for hurting and arresting people. No immediate arrest? No cops are helping.
