Wondering how to choose a thesis lab? Interested in learning to code with little background in it? Imagining what the first year of grad school is like? Check out my first blog post as I talk about my journey toward computation and joining the !

What makes a good lab? Are group meetings really the best way? In the we recently reexamined how we organize our weeks, and then redesigned everything in a systematic way (100% democratically!). I blogged about our design process and takeaways:

1/ Dear friends (and P.I.s), in these volatile times, do spare a thought for students of Iranian origin, especially those studying in the US. The past decade was devastating for most of us who had close ties to Iran, no matter what political background we came from.

I'm becoming increasingly convinced that formal training in reasoning and argument construction should be a (the?) core part of every Ph.D. program. Why not put philosophy at the core of the Ph.D?

When I left grad school in 2008, I owed $70k in federal student loans. (A poor choice I wouldn’t make again.) For the past 11 years, I’ve been making payments (except for a period of under employment), totaling about $60,000 in payments. Guess how much I still owe. $70,000.

Excited to announce a new textbook edited by Kostas Kampourakis & Tobias Uller: "Philosophy of Science for Biologists" ()! It is at the final production stage and will hit the shelves next year. Look at this table of contents! But...we need YOUR help to pick a cover!

Question: What’s the best decision you’ve made in your career so far? I’ll start: My best decision was choosing to follow what I was passionate about, rather than staying in my comfort zone and only pursuing what I had the skills to do at the time.

Here's a list we've been compiling of paid summer research experiences for undergrads, highlighting some programs of interest and biased toward neuroscience related topics. If I missed one, let me know so we can add it!

Cynthia Rothrock vs Karen Sheperd in "Righting Wrongs"(1986)Another amazing film by Corey Yuen. What's amazing about the scene right here is that you have two female world champions facing off on film. That rail flip kick is bonkers.

As Kari and I write in our data appendix: "Science is not a set of facts, but a process... it is alive." I think this is a key idea for readers to understand, and hope science writers will continue conveying it. To me, it makes big ideas more compelling, not less. (8/n)

When I first started teaching, I was terrified of making mistakes. I planned all my lessons meticulously, working out every example beforehand backwards and forwards, all to make sure I would never be caught up at the blackboard in front of everyone doing something *wrong*. 1/14

Reform on 1st-gen access often tackles issues like finances or academic preparedness or so-called "soft skills." But there are other big obstacles: Toxic elite cultural scripts about merit that even the most "progressive" people espouse. We must build new scripts. 10/11

One of the unspoken rules of elite graduate education is that you're supposed to work very hard, but never appear to be working hard. That is how you establish a reputation as "naturally brilliant." 2/11

"In short: Black academics, already underrepresented in science, are less likely to land grants critical to advancing their careers, in part because they tend to want to study interventions that could improve the health of poor Americans of color" Important piece by

Underrepresented faculty perform invisible labor mentoring students in their depts -- but also mentoring students from other departments, schools, universities that lack underrepresented faculty. This mentoring is critical to diversity (in any field), but almost never rewarded.
