People generally view self harm as a "very bad" thing that they will try to help you stop if they find out you do it. Can someone explain to me why it's bad? If it's done safely, with no lasting damage, and is an effective method of stress relief, why is it so bad?

also always interesting to see how people view say, cutting vs cigarette smoking

People are very bad at recognising some types of self-harm. I actively started smoking because killing myself slowly was a better alternative to doing it faster. People worried, but nowhere near as much as if I'd started cutting. (See also: not eating / bingeing, not sleeping)

yeah same! on retrospect I realize I picked up smoking and stuck with it because I was using it as a way of self-medicating my anxiety and its downstream consequences. cigarettes weren't the problem, in fact they were the ugly-but-effective solution

similarly, self-harm might look troubling, but it is itself not the problem – one has to go upstream to find out what the real problem is. I'd guess that often the person is being dehumanized in some way. school, family, peers, etc

I’ve usually seen people IRL recognize this. It’s a clue that something else is messed up.
