So... unless you are suggesting that the State is a supernatural deity that has power over nature, how would you prove we were not atheists because we "loved the State"?

I'm glad the show has helped you, and you're more than welcome to call in, but you're on a really wrong track here. I could tell you exactly how Matt would knock this argument apart. Hell, I could probably do it myself. Just thought I should warn you.

If I can make a suggestion: you'll get farther by making sure you don't assume anything about the worldview of the other person, and starting from a place of asking for their definitions of things like God, state, worship, etc. That'll be the first thing that gets called out.

For example, assuming the atheists that host AXP (myself included) are also statists (whatever that is) and worship the State (whatever THAT is) in some way is a nonstarter. You won't get past that claim and to the rest of your hypothetical argument.

Start with your definitions, and ask if we agree. Only once we both agree on how you're defining God, State, atheist, and statist will we be able to have a productive debate.

If this debate is still going on, consider using http://Letter.wiki . It's a platform I'm involved with, for the purpose of thoughtful conversation and productive debate that's hard to achieve on twitter :).
