Rationality is an emotional accomplishment, not an intellectual one. This is why we’re focused on increasing rationality by motivating it.

  3. Worry about the state of media, the lack of controls on its quality, and what the resulting false or distorted news means for our society. My case is just one of thousands that transpire in the way I described. (2/4)

The Wall Street Journal just published an article about me and Bridgewater that is filled with intentional factual errors. You can read about my account of what's happening here:

I was a Managing Director at Lehman, warning of an impending financial crisis, while you were still cutting your teeth. I was one of the first Wall Street executives to contribute to ZH. This is but the next Orwellian stage. Wake up Neel.

So many “The coronavirus isn’t a big deal” pieces are echoes of the Wuhan govt (and Beijing) keeping the coronavirus under wraps during the initial outbreak. The arguments come from the same place—disrupting the economy and causing panic are bad, so let’s control the narrative.

Cultural shifts, or human capacity to shift and discover new niches, comes exclusively from ability to THINK ABOUT THINKING Any top-down constraint that tries to interfere with this strategic capability will result in lockdown within a niche with diminishing or negative returns.

Our media is indistinguishable from the media of the totalitarian states that constantly related everything to the greatness of communism or fascism. It's just relentless "liberal democracy is the only way" propaganda. It's incredible that anyone thinks otherwise.

  12. My sense is that there has been *much* more energy behind than has been reflected in official narratives. Hence This is what I thought about Bernie & Trump in 2016. I only wish the first primary were a simple secret ballot to test that theory.

  13. You know what? If the MSM didn't react to Every. Single. Thing. Tweeted. Maybe he'd have less control on the narrative. Just a thought.

  14. Fun fact: the publication of fake news was punishable in 17th century England as the common law misdemeanor of Scandalum Magnatum, closely related to seditious libel but not as frequently charged. Another fact: the First Amendment was written in order to abolish laws like these.

It’s ... it’s 50x more deadly, spreads more rapidly, originated next to a biowarfare lab, and has no vaccine. But sure, let’s talk about the flu. Gotta say ... the coordinated narrative control we’re seeing out of both the US and China is mighty impressive.

We need a new modern institution: something like “Truth Courts”—zero idea what they look like, and the devil is in the details, but if you want to write me a proposal for one, do it in my DMs and I may pay you to make it real on a product-level.

  18. There has been a genre of “official misinformation” where Washington Post, Wired, USA Today, BuzzFeed, etc have posted dangerously trivial headlines comparing coronavirus to the flu. Fortunately, NYT has been publishing the science from NEJM, Lancet, CDC, WHO. Credit where due.

Whenever the media says a group of people is evil, I want to see if that's really the case. It's in my nature to go where the big corporations tell us we can't go.

Yes, group rationality is more powerful yet there is only one key difference. Group rationality involves a shared value; a shared goal; and members willing to listen to both proposals and criticisms from other members.
