Hot take. The reason why it's important to humanize villains is not so you can condone their actions, it's so you realize that, given the right circumstances, you could become a villain too. And that is what some people cannot handle.

I don't know which villain you are referring too but it sounds like poor writing and likely straight-up propaganda tbh. Obviously bad writing is always a possibility, so the concept of sympathetic villain can be done badly, like every other concept in fiction.

I was referring to things like this.
I don’t think it was intentional, but the message I get from this kind of story is, “don’t trust people with a good social justice agenda because they might randomly turn out to be a villain”, which is... not a good message.https://twitter.com/Lollardfish/status/1378881480407969794 … - Show replies

The lesson should be that people who are horribly wrong are also human, not people who are right are inhuman.

Yesss. They did this to Poison Ivy too in the comics. She was right all along!
-
Yeah, not my favourite villain trope. There is so much straightforward evil in real life to draw inspiration from!

It seems like a certain range of good intentions ever get this treatment with any regularity. There are very real-world actions committed by people and institutions which are considered 'moderate' and 'reasonable' which lead to countless atrocities.

and sometimes they'll admit the villain has a point or was taking advantage of valid concerns but never actually do anything about it? The conclusion, sequel, next season what have you don't show any reforms or progress and everyone just acts like the villain was a videogame boss

like in fantastic beasts where he just merks a baby and we literally have no idea why they're merking anybody in this not-yet wwii stage of his leadership lmao
