This has me more worried than the warm temps in the Arctic right now. That sea ice north of Greenland among the last vestiges of old, thick sea ice existing in the Arctic ocean. Break it apart, it can circulate straight out into the Atlantic come summer. We'll see what comes.https://twitter.com/seaice_de/status/967679640402874369 …

There is open water north of #Greenland where the thickest sea ice of the #Arctic used to be. It is not refreezing quickly because air temperatures are above zero confirmed by @dmidk's weather station #KapMorrisJesup. Wacky weather continues with scary strength and persistence. pic.twitter.com/YMnvCD8XvL

Mike MacFerrin, Glaciologist Retweeted Ruth Mottram

Thank you @ruth_mottram & @lavergnetho’s excellent visualization here. It isn’t-so-much that the thick sea ice melted, but it was blown offshore and nothing froze to replace it. It could blow right back onshore again soon (hopefully?), or... not...https://twitter.com/ruth_mottram/status/968220575217934336 …

Honestly, I’ve no idea why WaPo quoted me (even tangentially) in this article. 🧐🤪 I’m a scientist who studies ice... land ice anyway. But there are hundreds of ppl more qualified to quote about sea ice. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Ah well. http://wapo.st/2CmcqxM?tid=ss_tw&utm_term=.1700ba68755c …

Worrying times. The UK just bangs on about the 'Beast from the East' & all the low temperatures & possible heavy snow leading to travel disruption etc.; whereas the real 'weather' story today is what's happening north. Ignorance is not bliss in this case... @BBCNews @SkyNews
