Do any of you realize how insanely terrifying the Disney / Fox merger is? And how terrible it would be for the industry at large? Thousands laid off. Less competition. All leading to coke / pepsi situation in studio releasing. It's a death knell.

I don't know the industry that well, but can't good movies and good IP come from anywhere? It's not like we're talking about monopolies/duopolies in essentials like cellphone service or agriculture here.

regardless of industry, when a corporation gets too big that it can influence the industry with a snap, growth gets stunted.

back in the 90s, disney was already powerful enough to upend copyright law that would have allowed their properties to lapse into public domain. their stopping it meant that creators and the culture were unable to have a richer public domain to create more art and culture.

I actually went to private school, for what it's worth. Why would I be subscribed to Film Crit Hulk in the first place if I didn't appreciate art and culture?

Disney is already problematically large. Last holiday movie season (basically all of November and December,) Disney had the #1 movie in release during ten of the eleven weekends. With them absorbing Fox, it could get to the point where they can easily push around other studios.

No. Because we're not just talking about content. We're talking distribution, talent availability, production resources, publicity mechanisms... putting 40% of that into the hands of one company is scary. If this were the situation in the 1970s, that era wouldn't have happened.

Re: your first phrase, I suggest reading trades and noting weekend box office competitions and how studios program and counter-program. Disney absorbs a competitor and the town (and other film production areas) lose the jobs to make Fox’s 20-40 films. 1-2 bill. at 50 mil. per.

In advance, I apologize for making up the numbers for films and the average. Number of films produced might be less. Cost per film might be more. I expect Fox’s non-feature production continues. For now there are buyers in cable, streaming, and network.
