Another trend since SourceForge is less private hosting, including Foundations. Eclipse, Apache, Linux Foundation make extensive use of Github for hosting. Back in the day of SourceForge, these Foundation predominately self hosted.

The difference with SourceForge is that it, like SVN, was not distributed. When Source Forge forced large OSS projects off its platform unless they could pay enterprise rates, migration was a nightmare. At least today everyone has complete histories.

Good point and hopefully it will incent MS to continue to innovate around GitHub.
