Actually, Kamala was asked a question in a press gaggle in New Hampshire (10 hours ago btw) and gave a thoughtful answer. Full thing shared here on right 👇pic.twitter.com/kl0TKLOsOs

I appreciate the context, but the reality is districts are drawn by the prison population she is saying can’t vote. I think it’s difficult to parse those two things. You have to be for full suffrage, full citizen rights, or have districts that don’t count that population.

Districts are also drawn based on those who are under voting age or the mentally disabled who don’t have the capacity to vote.

Census counts inhabitants not voters. Likewise, immigrants / green card holders cannot vote now but are counted in the census (or should be).

The slight difference there is at least those folks are adults with theoretical ability to live where they want, rather than forced into a specific area. I have been told a few times prison pops are used to manipulate voting areas, to inflate population, aiding gerrymandering.

Now whether that holds any water or not, I don’t know. But it would be convenient to include prison population in districts knowing they can’t vote to make it advantageous for one party or another.

Yes, the incarcerated are being counted where they are incarcerated rather than at their home, meaning that large prisons (usually in GOP rural areas) get over-represented and the home area of the prisoner gets underrepresented. It’s theft of representation.

this is called a "walk back" Ian those of us who studied her record, though, always knew she was a cop - nice that she's confirming it now

Aww you’re still behind. Try and catch up. Using the “cop” reference isn’t scaring anyone anymore. Ask Lightfoot opponents in Chicago how that worked out for them. Try again cos that ain’t gon work.

I'm skeptical that Lightfoot will reform CPD, but there's evidence she, at least, tried in her time on the Board and Accountability Task Force. It's disturbing to me that we apparently expect candidates for potus to have a strict yes/no answer to every question thrown at them. Kamala Harris has provided comprehensive policies to remedy some issues, will provide more, & has committed to study others. That's admirable.

I'd really love to start a convo for a victims compensation fund. Murder victims families/parents of kidnapped children have to manage their electricity bills/mortgage through an unkind grief period. Too many crime victims rely on community/church resources to survive.

I find it really frustrating that the punditry treats Sanders black-and-white "yes" and Buttigieg's black-and-white "no" as equally laudable answers, but Harris saying "it's complicated" and deserving of actual debate/discussion is messing up.

A long answer doesn’t necessarily mean a thoughtful one, it just usually means a bad answer wrapped in long, flowery language. This is no exception. “I really understand the desire to do the right thing but I won’t” is a bad answer.

The replies to Zeleny are interesting. Many people are perfectly OK with Harris taking time to think and then be thoughtful in her response.
