mainstream open source is a loose syndicate of technicians using code to cut employers' cost, who view community as a leveragable commodity and maintainers as ~support staff from an adjacent department gl if you're looking to learn, have fun, or enjoy like-minded folks

Heard about AVX-512 performance transitions party from the the cool kid down the block, but not sure if your parents will let you go? I'll go there so you don't have to: Includes run-on sentences weighed down by up to three footnotes each.

Never let software engineers build a bridge. They'd rebuild it over and over until it stopped collapsing under heavy trucks. Thereafter, every couple years, the next programmers would rebuild it again because they didn't understand or approve of the original construction style.

We’re adding two engineers to our team. One focused on security tools in Rust, the other on mitigations. Apply directly, or DM me.

There's a real perception of proprietary software as immutable and I wonder whether this is actually an unexpected outcome of free software - if we don't have the source code, we no longer think we have any control at all

A standardized safe transmute trait would solve a major pain point I have with Rust. Right now reading structured data from the disk or the network can be too difficult and usually requires unsafe or transmute.

In some ways this is welcome compared to the menagerie of cacheability bits in armv8, but I feel like I’m going to mess something up if I’m not setting them.

Riscv doesn’t seem to have any cache control bits in the page table entries. How do I set the cacheability for MMIO pages?

I’ve read the async rust announcement and briefly looked at the book, but does async rust need an external library to implement an event loop and schedule futures? That seems like an important thing to farm out to someone’s buggy crate.

Is it okay for the compiler to clobber callee save registers if the code panics? The panicking branch is no-return so I don’t think the contents of eg rax could ever be used again.
