They aren’t explaining the capacity benefits cos it’s the weakest part of the
#hs2 case. Their entire business case is built on speed....if they changed it to Capacity there is no Economic case that justifies the cost....that was at £32bn....it’s now £100bn!pic.twitter.com/mN0s6h72kq

Stopping things like this are more of a surefire vote winner for politicians than backing them. Infrastructure projects should always have cross party support so they don't get used for points winning later. But perhaps impossible in UK political environment.

One word explanation - capacity. All the north-south routes are full and can't absorb more trains, and to increase their capacity would be disruptive, very expensive and unpopular with lineside residents. PS I've not read the article.
