Britain used to be a moderate, good-natured, and fundamentally calm country, which celebrated its practical judgment and resistance to utopianism. Three years of culture war have basically driven it insanehttps://medium.com/p/a-short-guide-to-britains-long-attempt-to-leave-europe-27825d37337e …

This is my long-read for Medium's Gen publication, trying to explain Brexit to the Americans.

That stuff is hard to write. Three years of twists and turns, with lots of technical understanding required to comprehend them.

But on the other hand it's easy, because at the heart of it you just say: You know that Trump thing where you want a culturally pure country and fight for it by ignoring objective reality? Yeah, that.

It's remarkable how every time you do an American show on Brexit, the hosts always say: 'Yeah it's exactly the same here'. The special relationship has never been stronger. In a profoundly dreadful way.

Demographics will be kind to the cause, but 3 years along, think about this - EVERY UNDERGRADUATE currently in their FIRST, SECOND & THIRD year of study has had no vote on their future relationship with the EU and the learning/growth opportunities it would offer. @EUErasmusPlus

I'm almost in agreement But I suspect that the referendum has simply shown that huge numbers of people were already mad (i.e. detached from evidence, expertise, reality) Some of this is probably the fault of the technocrats, but mostly it's technology & rate of change...

I loved and admired that britain. Sometimes its pragmatism was a bit too extreme for my taste, but it was a much needed voice of reason. Not sure it will ever return, but I hope it does so. Soon-ish.
