So I made a thing... Radar range for the located at Mürted Akinci AB, in . The S-400 is an impressive system, significantly bolstering Ankara's Air Defense capabilities. Costly though, both politically and financially.

Something to potentially watch: Cosmos 2542, a Russian inspection satellite, has recently synchronized its orbit with USA 245, an NRO KH11. A thread:

With the additionof the SM-3 Blk IIA to the western BMD arsenal, such a BMD network would offer quite capable performances against MRBM and IRBM threats, with some radar and interceptor ranges overlapping, as well as some redundancy.

In the end, it is likely that the choosen solution would use both mobile (i.e ships) and fixed (AN/TPY-2 or other) sites. The ships would be deployed during crisis, while the fixes sites would provide 24/365 coverage, like what the Turkey-located AN/TPY-2 does.

The accessibility offered by the base is however an advantage offset by the lower altitude of the base, only 600m ASL, when compared with other potential sites. Whether this tradeoff is worth it and how it will affect radar performance would have to be evaluated.

Another option would be to install the AN/TPY-2 at the Vaziani Military Base, located south-east of Tbilissi. The Vaziani base is used at a join NATO-Georgia training ground since 2014, and features a 2500m runway suitable for heavy-lifting planes like the C-17.

For instance, in the immediate surroundings of Tbilissi, there are numerous spots that have an elevated altitude (up to 2000m), a good line of sight in the south-east direction and are connected to the road network.

    - Georgia is very well located to provide radar coverage of the Iranian IRBM/MRBM activities.

    - The installation of a radar in Georgia could have interesting side effects. With NATO assets located in the country, the capacity of Georgia to face blackmail and aggression strategies from its neighbour would be increassed, for attacking would now imply facing NATO troops.

    - It doesn’t require ships at sea all the time to provide radar coverage. While SMART-L-MM/N-equipped ships would provide more range, a 360° cover and some overlapping capabilities, there are high costs associated with maintaining ships at sea 24/365.

like this solution a lot, for various reasons: - It makes use of existing assets and doesn’t require an extensive redesign of the European BMD system we have today.

Lastly, the solution could come from the relocation of the AN/TPY-2 in Georgia. While not a NATO member, Georgia have extensive ties with the Alliance, and would likely accept the installation of a BMD radar on its soil.

It however implies that at all time, one or two BMD ships must be at station in order to provide the needed radar cover.

Other possible platforms include the Type 45 and Horizon-class destroyers, which are already using another SMART-L derivative, the S1850M. This solution has the advantage of simplicity, as it doesn’t require new hardware to be developed, or new sites to be constructed.

Since March 2019, SMART-L-MM/N radars are progressively installed on the De Zeven Provinciën class vessels. This radar, with a reported 2000nm range against ballistic threats, gives Europe the needed resources for this task.
