Donald Trump is the ideal Republican presidential candidate, if your goals are to maximize base Democratic turnout *and* maximize the number of votes for the Democrat from people who voted for Romney, McCain and/or W Bush.
Who did Trump run against that was in office during the Bush years? Rubio, Cruz, & Rand Paul weren't elected until Obama was President. Kasich, Walker, and Jeb were fiscally conservative state governors. Ben Carson and Carli Fiorina weren't even politicians.

You can't blame spending during the W years on the candidates Trump ran against. You certainly can't accuse Rubio, Cruz, or Rand Paul of not fighting against Obama. Their fighting was far more substantial that Trump's idiotic birther "Fight".

It sounds to me like you are trying to say that the GOP should become the populist party, and abandon its constitutional conservative pretense to appeal more to a base that just wants to vote out "the establishment" in favor of big spending and reactionary social engineering.
