Meanwhile A ballroom elder who will remain nameless is still fighting for a producing credit for putting the structure of the show together, categories, etc... and Jameela is the Executive Producer along with two cis white guys who produced queer eye.

  6. This is why we always say not to lump Black and POC on some equivalency. Non Black POCs take our space too. Being queer doesn’t = I can speak for all queer spaces. Cut the crap.

Being queer does not make you ballroom. Being any number of marginalized identities does not make you ballroom. The only thing that makes you ballroom is if you are actually from it. And most of us who are from it, sought it out when we had no one else.

Thing is, even as a Black gay man, I wouldn't consider myself well-versed enough in ballroom culture to be judging a competition (...esp in a major, paid gig). So, Jameela using this moment to come out as Queer as some kinda cheap deflecting tactic means less than nothing to me.

I hate how election season on here is when blk pundits or visible figures seem to jockey for position of best drum interpreter for the black electorate. Yes we’d have more insight than our non-blk counterparts but not all insight is equal and is informed by class character

My good friend says there is no such thing as microaggression. If you feel the violence, no matter how big or small the impact, then it’s a macroaggression. There aren’t any levels to it.

THIS. I have also stopped distinguishing the harm of "implicit" (versus "explicit") bias.

  15. We MUST stop using the term micro aggression. I stopped recently myself. We have to be done classifying racism as having levels. It’s ALL violent. Micro or macro no one should feel like their racism is “less” than others. They all intersect and feed each other.

Stop using euphemisms for anti-Blackness like “privilege.” Stop asking people to “use” their participation in anti-Black systems. Start ensuring that they can no longer participate.

Not to take away from her journey to queerness, but this statement by Jameela Jamil defending her casting as a judge on a voguing competition show as a then-closeted person with no connection to the ballroom scene really highlights the fallacy of “using one’s privilege for good.”
