So: #SierraBurgessIsALoser feels like a movie that would have done inordinately well in 2003/2004 (like The Internship) with all of its “edgelord humor”, but it’s saddled with ‘80s aesthetics and a clunky and unacceptable 1999/2000 romantic subplot...pic.twitter.com/KdBJ7WMamH

...but obviously none of this makes sense because these mofos have IPhones, way-too-easy to hack Instagram accounts, and are using topical “edgelord” humor about “trans experiences” and “hermaphrodites” and I just want someone to make this make sense 😬 #SierraBurgesIsALoserpic.twitter.com/dMi0PsMCaM

So just on the surface, the film is...not good. But there are some fundamemtal issues that many other critics identified on here too. #SierraBurgessIsALoserpic.twitter.com/6zvwG9wiG2

Firstly, Sierra. Besides not being a decent person (for the 1001 reasons that litter this tag), she is also an extremely weak protagonist. I didn’t care for her. In fact, I cared more for skinny, “bitchy” Veronica/Ronnie more. #SierraBurgesIsALoser

Ronnie has an identifiable arc. And she goes from being trash, to being decent and empathetic. And we see enough of her background and her mother (I will get to that) to semi-understand how she got here. #SierraBurgessIsALoser

On the flipside, the film makes it clear that Sierra was given all the tools by her “attractive parents” (I just...) to succeed. Even her mother, who she unfairly makes the target of her resentment later in the film, does nothing but build Sierra UP. #SierraBurgessIsALoserpic.twitter.com/BdEY9kZoJc

Which is much more than most fat folx ever have. Hell, ask most of us & we will tell you that the fat-shaming started AT HOME. So the fact that Sierra walks around w/ this very much unearned “the world owes me/is conspiring against me” attitude is alarming #SierraBurgessIsALoserpic.twitter.com/2Xs5UComPg

Take all this & add that to the fact that they’re somehow still able to humanize Ronnie in this trash bag of a movie & could do this for Sierra in a film that is supposed to be about body positivity and acceptance and etc, and it is v disappointing really. #SierraBurgessIsALoserpic.twitter.com/PSPmUu9bNH

        - Jamey has no depth as a love interest besides “sensitive jock” which he played in TATBILB and I would have much rather had the film focus on Sierra and Ronnie’s friendship vs Sierra and her obsession (let’s call it what is) with him and his 2D-ness. #SierraBurgessIsALoserpic.twitter.com/UiAgUsxE9a

        - The funny Black best friend trope needs to die. IT IS OLD. It is a relic of DATED “progressive” TV. And all it did here was spice up the blandness of this film and literally try to distract from Sierra’s qwhite unstable behavior. LET IT DIE GOOD LORD. #SierraBurgessIsALoserpic.twitter.com/POT2d6TYoF

        - You don’t know how excited I was to initially see Chrissy Metz playing Ronnie’s mom & then how pissed I was all that misognyistic & etc (fueled by her own body image issues) shit fell out of her mouth I want more (& better) for fat actors and actresses. #SierraBurgessIsALoserpic.twitter.com/fIfFkf6jRl

        - The pacing almost snapped my neck. It was bewilderingly fast & let me know right away that this wasn’t gonna be enjoyable For context, the film is nearly 2 hours long (1:45 I believe) and Sierra declares *25 minutes* in that she is following for Jamey. #SierraBurgessIsALoserpic.twitter.com/WXf7UnnNae

        - The film tries to convince us that Sierra is “good” because she is “book smart” and I’m crine because the writers have clearly never met smart folx from higher institutions Smart =/= good But, this probably explains her inferiority superiority complex. #SierraBurgessIsALoserpic.twitter.com/OpfDOot0bG

Now. We arrive at that ending. And let me say with my chest that not only did #SierraBurgessIsALoser not earn that ending but it was such a put-off to me because that ending essentially rewards Sierra for every terrible, no-good thing she did in that film Which is unacceptable.pic.twitter.com/KeLCCl4Vmn

Sierra catfishes a boy for weeks & says its okay because it’s still “her words”. She blows off her bff & ignores his call to come clean early in the movie. She gives Jamey a kiss he did not consent to after stalking him & Ronnie for their entire date. #SierraBurgessIsALoserpic.twitter.com/poCe35wRTS

She then hacks Ronnie’s IG to punish her for a situation she put her in to begin with. And then she turns around to fix this all with a song that immortalizes her victim complex. Mind you, there is no apology. But Ronnie & Jamey take her back anyway. #SierraBurgessIsALoserpic.twitter.com/AGDxIXbTGk

And the Jamey convo was especially nauseating because he names all the reasons he is still into Sierra. Her being funny, smart, all that bullshit, despite the catfishing and despite HER BODY & I just wanted to throw myself onto I605 & end my suffering. #SierraBurgessIsALoserpic.twitter.com/vIi68lmHJ3

There are absolutely no consequences for her mean-spirited behavior and I dunno y’all I have to ask the question of how exactly is this not as harmful as something like, let’s say, Insatiable?
