THREAD: POC are constantly being used by white people and those of us in academia see this on a regular basis. Our words and bodies are used but who we are has little to no value other than to be props. #medievaltwitterpic.twitter.com/dmFQ33UsdI

I had turned this offer down because I could see it for what it was. So did @adam_miya but this does not negate that this “trotting us out” when it suits white scholars is a thing. The fact that the idea was even floated to contact scholars who have left the field is appalling.
We are just objects and white scholars do not understand the trauma that can come from leaving a field, especially if you are a PoC. I have no idea why anyone would have thought that was a good idea to drag out scholars who left. P.S. We know how 1 in the cfp feels.
Now I get that the current draft is much different, but here’s the thing, it still involves tokenism. Why didn’t white scholars involved ask these MoC individuals to edit a special issue on their own? Now there are 2MoC who have agreed to work on this, but again, they're shields.
Full disclosure, I critiqued this in a private space on a different social media platform. This space is for me and those I trust to discuss. This trust was broken somehow and my critique was reported back to the white editor.
She tried to rectify this by having my and Adam’s names removed from the current CFP, but the thing is there is more to it than that. It's about respecting privacy and also working WITH your co-editors instead of putting the work on me.
The white scholar listed to me what SHE believed was private, apparently locked down accts are not. @LopezJantzen as a co-editor, worked tirelessly over the past few days to sort out an issue involving a privacy breach that was leaked to the white scholar but
the white scholar believes my privacy is not as important as the snitch. Overall, the point is that we are used to begin with and not valued as people. White people want to use our names for their own benefit. It’s opportunism, which was what my private critique was.
This is also about how WoC/PoC are treated, even by our colleagues. Our spaces and bodies are never our own. I have had people, more often than not, white women just go and do things without my consent, whether it's touching my hair or skin or
yelling at someone &then leaving me in a lurch to clean up after they run away. White scholars often use us at their disposal, make us targets &abuse us in every way they can. Nothing belongs to us as PoC. There is no space in this world where we can be free of this nonsense.
What I'm saying is even virtual spaces that are locked down and private----those spaces are still infiltrated by white people who want to harm us (intentionally or not). It's tiring, disrespectful, and just continues harm.
