Something that I keep seeing on here is how many victims of abuse there are who have to work or interact with their abusers. What kind of environment have we created that allows this harm to continue not just to the survivor but to potential victims?

I cannot for the life of me understand why academic institutions continue to protect and coddle predators. I mean I know why but I find it so appalling that we have systems in place (not just in academia) but in every industry that perpetually protect abusers and people who

quietly stand by and say or do nothing. They too are complicit. Most, but not all abusers are male. Most but not all victims/survivors are female. This system of abuse keeps feeding itself. I know the #metoo movement helped make some changes, but in terms of academia,

victims, by and large, are left without measures in place to protect them. They continue to be harmed by their predators by having to see them and hear them and interact with them as though nothing has happened. That's the thing. It's gaslighting and traumatizing.

We have "proper" procedures in place, yet investigations usually turn up "empty" because unless someone has been violently abused, there is too much "grey" area that allows predators ways to excuse their abuse away. The system is rigged to protect those in power. Always.

I don't know who is listening, but I want survivors to know this abuse is not just in their heads. You are gaslit by your departments, your bosses, your colleagues. Your value and self worth shouldn't be up for debate and yet when you are abused, this is exactly what happens.

Just know that you've got solidarity. We know the names of the predators you've told us. Our whisper networks will continue to warn others &ruin these people in ways they don't know & can't control. They can delude themselves into thinking they will get away but

continue to whisper & let those whispers grow. I don't think they have figured out, especially in academia, how they can be erased. Just like they try and erase you and your trauma, we can erase them too. They have books and publications that we never have to cite.

Let them think they have power and authority to abuse people and get away with it. All that work they do in the name of academia can be undone because they can't resist the urge to be predatory creeps. And speaking of creeps, there are some on here, even in medieval studies

we know you lurk on here, scoping out women. We know who you are. http://We.know.who.you .are. The whisper networks are on fire. Best stop while you're ahead. Anyway, I think we need to stop being silent. Quit gaslighting victims. Support them. Don't excuse behavior of abusers.

Speak up for victims. We need to be louder. Even if you hear someone saying sexist things shut them down. Don't let them get away with this behavior. We condone it when we are silent. This is perpetuated in males circles. You can't be an ally to women if you are silent.

Just know we are in this together. We won't be able to break down these systems of abuse without each other. Anyway, small rant just to let you know I hear you and see you. I'm going to continue to tell EVERYONE about those you've told me about. Fuck them. Love you! Solidarity!
