THREAD: So it looks like the name-change passed. Congratulations. I want you to remember that this is the least you can do. The lowest of bars. Worry more about changing the field than you are a name-change from hereon in. 1/15pic.twitter.com/yAYgWJNwGx

What you should've been doing for years was listening & working on these difficult issues before an implosion. They aren't easy and aren't comfortable. Most of you are good people & have good intentions but good intentions are not enough to combat racism, sexism, etc. 2/15

You also voted for more diversity. Bravo. It took you SO long to do this, even though I gather many of you have wanted this for years. Let this be a reminder to advocate for change when you see it. Don't wait for a crisis. We lose too many good people. 3/15

So the question is now: where do we go from here? The Executive Director had the difficult task of bringing about change in a shorter time than imagined. The Board was often indifferent and apathetic. You were elected and didn't take your roles seriously. 4/15

The ED has resigned. My belief is that the Board failed and should follow. Hardly anyone on there is fit to serve. Many on there (at least 3) have supported and backed the sexual predator and held up this harassment policy. You need to go. 5/15

One of you shouldn't be writing a harassment policy at all given your partner is a pro at online harassment and punching down. You need to go. 6/15

I don't know what that org is going to look like, but I know what sort of field I want for everyone. One that is inclusive and nurtures generations of people to appreciate the richness of the past in its diversity, so that any one will know that the field itself is for them. 7/15

You have work to do in your classrooms, in your research, in how you interact with others. Racism was only part of the problem in the field, albeit a big one. Harassment and abuse is another. This gate-keeping is cruel and those who participate are failing as decent humans. 8/15

I have heard from middle-career white men that they never thought their voices mattered and that they feared speaking up would seem like they were 'mansplaining.' We NEED you to speak up AGAINST racism, sexism, abuse. Your very being gives you more sway, use it for good! 9/15

When you do, we will support you. If you are a predator, you need to stop. The whisper network is not going to whisper any more, we are going to scream. Let me just say that this goes for female abusers too. Your names are out there. 10/15

This should have always been a team effort, not left to our most vulnerable to start this change. But we are here now, and this is where we begin to change. 11/15

And to white women, my god, you have destroyed some of us. You are fragile. Reflect. Get over yourselves. Your feminism is not mine, it never was. If you see this as a statement of love, then you are already on the right track. Keep going. 12/15

One day, maybe, as my sister @slomuto once said, we will be included & welcomed as scholars, instead of being invited for being 'others'. We will hopefully have a seat as equals. It will be ours too. We aren't there yet. This is going to be a long-game, everyone. Buckle up. 13/15

People outside our community are listening and watching. This is an opportunity for this community of Early Medievalists to shine. You haven't been in the limelight, so make the changes and be the models that other fields will envy. You will make mistakes, but don't stop. 14/15pic.twitter.com/X7OrFekFHK

Finally, I know this isn't over. I said this is a team effort b/c it's true. You have demonstrated you know how to pull together in crises, so don't let it get to that stage again. I want to thank the voices who have been so courageous in whatever this movement is called. 15/
