I've only ever described myself as an early medievalist, even though my PhD is on Bede. Could it be the Society for the Study of Early Medieval England?

Sounds good.

What if we change the name *and* engage on a practical front to clarify the misconceptions? Changes in academe are fantastic, but the problems are fomenting beyond the ivory towers.

I'm organising a session
@IMC_Leeds 2020 on the name (& scope) of its '#AngloSaxon Studies' strand (I'm strand convenor). This will be a genuine consultation with all views heard & respected - there's no preconceived outcome. But we are thinking critically, actively, about this. -
Excellent. What if the ISAS vote doesn't pass?

As someone who is not a scholar, nor a native English speaker, I had no idea that the term Anglo-Saxon was widely used by racists. How and why? And why don't people just use Old English then?

@erik_kaars has a fantastic explanation. Using "Old English" doesn't include the archaeologists, numismatics experts, art historians, etc. So we need a name that reflects a variety of disciplines, not just English lit. - Show replies
