Big vote for preprints. If it's an area I know about, I don't need to know what two other reviewers thought of it to make an assessment "In preparation" frankly meaningless imo & I advise trainees to not mix their actual pub list with in-prep (just mention as ongoing projects)

Seeing "in preparation" frequently and wondering what others think about these was actually a key motivation for this poll. On the flip-side, many appointed committees (in Germany) still only consider published papers...

Thanks for this poll, as an early researcher who does not have any published papers and still interested in postdoc positions I'm listing "in prep" papers. Given the votes and the comments on your poll, maybe I should just stop applying for postdoc positions until I publish them.

How about posting preprints of those works that are currently in review? This would provide the benefit of showing that the work is finished while incurring little risk

A big thumbs up for public pre-prints, but if this isn't possible (e.g., PI doesn't allow it), then attach ms drafts with your application to show the work actually exists. Most evaluators will consider "in prep" as meaningless.

Another vote for preprints. When evaluating applications, we should at least be able to evaluate the science rather than counting lines on a CV. "In prep" is meaningless without a preprint to back it uphttps://twitter.com/DingemanseMark/status/1119003833617854467 …

Voted preprints as work "In preparation" could be published after several years if ever (and analyses / acquisition may not necessarily be completed). A preprint indicates the work is performed, manuscript written, and already made publicly available.

I’m ok with listing “in prep” work on CVs but include honest assessment of status in parentheses (eg data collected and manuscript in prep, anticipate submission 03/20) An “in prep” project with data collected is diff than one preparing an IRB application.

IMO, if "in prep" means to give access at least to an abstract, data and code, then it would be interesting to consider.

Just wondering.. Are manuscripts that are submitted and under review also considered as “in prep”?
-
I would list those as submitted, however, without a preprint, I suspect they would not be considered in evaluation(?)
