Women in the seafood industry are mostly ignored and invisible, and today we'll be joined by a fantastic panel to discuss these and other gender issues in the industry. #IWD2021 You can watch the event live on IIED's website --> https://www.iied.org/live-now-fish-night-7-gender-equality-seafood-value-chain …pic.twitter.com/RZUiDHjZ9L

When you think about #fisheries, you think of men, says @EditrudithLuka1. It's deep-rooted that it's a man's job. So, making women more visible in the sector takes a big effort. Women being ignored is historical, and a result of patriarchy. #IWD2021pic.twitter.com/qJaxGkq4Rp

Women have the biggest role in the post-harvest sector, but they're missing from policymaking processes. Scale of engagement of women in the sector is small, because it's a small-scale sector - businesses are local, so getting recognised by national policymakers is challenging.

#Fishermen are symbolically significant, says @mcgustavsson. We don't think about the women who work in the related fisheries spaces - eg paperwork or transport. As a consequence of this, women often become positioned as secondary to fishermen and are left out of policy. #IWD2021pic.twitter.com/5rI7JraJy1

COVID-19 has impacted fisheries businesses says Bertha Villalobos. Businesses have closed, and women are impacted by this, having to leave work to do child care. This is one of the things that the government doesn't see. #IWD2021pic.twitter.com/MkcFE4kNZr

In Cambodia, tourism has gone down due to COVID-19 so there is a loss of income in #fishing communities. Domestic wild fish is expensive, so they have been importing cheaper farmed fish. The pandemic is increasing inequality in these communities, says Kyoko Kusakabe. #IWDpic.twitter.com/ndK2VThw5p

Question: What do need to get a feminist approach to fisheries management? We have identified that women are invisible, and identifying the issue is the first step. We need disaggregated data, but it's not enough, says Kyoko Kusakabe. #IWD2021

If we know that women aren't given fair wages, how do stop this? Supporting women's groups is one way. @EditrudithLuka1 says that she trains women fishers as facilitators, to show them that no matter the scale, they are leaders in their position and their localities. #IWDpic.twitter.com/yBb9kvmrM1

In Tanzania, small-scale #fisheries guidelines have included gender, which has helped ensure that women are included in policymaking spaces. And training has ensured that women have the confidence to present their case before ministers. Transformation is possible. #IWD2021

.@mcgustavsson says we must give women a better chance to work as fishers. Also, there needs to be equal value on all the kinds of work that comes with catching a fish. Women's right to collective action is important. #IWD2021pic.twitter.com/oIRLNZhVQY

Kyoko Kusakabe: We must change the definition of work: we have to recognise care work. Also, fisheries management is defined as capturing fish - we have to improve the whole fishing management framework and value chain. #IWDpic.twitter.com/JNzZvpL5Ex

Bertha Villalobos: The concept of what fishing is has to be bigger: who is going to take care of every part of it? If we believe that fishers take care of fish, the environment, and the whole value chain, we can make better policy that supports everyone. #IWDpic.twitter.com/F9VmTrd3ff

Final word from @EditrudithLuka1: We must make deliberate effort to support both women & men to turn these challenges into opportunities: there is potential but lack of capacity. Training must be done so that men & women can work together to make the sector more sustainable. #IWDpic.twitter.com/5v6939fZX8
