But pistols and pro cameras use “soft” triggers/buttons because it creates less vibration and therefore improves precision!

But they are a fraction of the throw of the current controllers. Mimicking the feel of professional equipment is a good plan, though!

Love and hate. GameCube triggers did it best. Analog trigger with a final binary click at the end.

Yep, GCC has the best of both worlds and you can use software to configure the threshold at which something fires, or just use the binary trigger input.

The closest thing to feeling like a real firearm is the Nintendo Zapper. Analog spring loaded long pull with a break towards the end of the pull that actually counts as "firing." (Sometimes you can get the button to register as firing before the break though)pic.twitter.com/EpSUugXb3a

GameCube had a hybrid trigger, IIRC? It was analogue, but also went "click". Sadly I hated it - not sure why. I think because it went click at the END of its travel - I think I'd prefer a click at the start, then a significant analogue travel. (but I bet they tested this too).

Another option is a click with movement, and then the trigger doesn't actually move any further, but pulling it harder is an analogue input. Might be interesting.

Controllers with programmable resistance seem to be next up, so perhaps then the software can create a clickiness or squishiness as suits

iPhone 7-8-9 have a great digital click for the home button

Would personally hate this for creative apps (including my own), where trigger sensitivity gives a lot of nuance to brush stroke heaviness and things like that.
