Intelligent learning requires movement and exploration. If your ideas are missing that, you will not reach AGI.

I agree about exploration and agency in general, but it doesn’t require physical movement — there are paralyzed children that still grow to be intelligent.

ML definitely seems like a field where many intuitions don't hold and most ideas don't work. There's a lot more trial and error, seeing what sticks, than in software engineering, it seems to me.

10000% true, conventional wisdom changes constantly and there are no solid heuristics for designing and training models ml research is tiresome and most of the things you work on either end up being dead ends or someone beats you to the punch and publishes before you fun stuff!

This is a nice thing about machine learning research compared to fields like physics: you can usually test hypotheses within a few hours or at most a few days. I think this is why the ML field has been able to advance as fast as it is.
